Kenyan Samwel Mailu won the Vienna marathon in a record 2:05:08

The 30-year-old athlete thus broke the previous record for the Viennese event held by Ethiopian Getu Feleke from 2014, when he won in 2:05:41.

“I have no problem. It’s a great achievement”declared the winner on television cameras after running through the streets of Vienna for the second time that he participated in a competition of this category.

“This is a great moment in my career, I have reached a great goal. My preparation now is for the great marathons in this world,” he revealed to ORF public television.

After leaving a group of compatriots far too early, Mailu crossed the finish line one minute and 49 seconds ahead of compatriot Bethwell Yegon, and two minutes and 38 seconds ahead of Titus Kimutai.

In the women’s race, the Kenyan also won Magdalene Maasai29 years old, with a period of 2:24:12, thirteen seconds ahead of her compatriot Agnes Keino (2:24:25). In third place was Gadise Mulu, from Ethiopia, with 2:24:50.

About 35,000 runners from 130 countries competed in the 40th edition of the “Vienna City Marathon” with a temperature of around 18 degrees on a sunny morning.
