the golfer Jon Rahm from Biscay, champion of the Augusta MastersThis Wednesday ensured that he is not playing to stay in first place of the PGA classification, as he has recently continued.
“I keep hearing them say it’s the number one thing in the world. As a player, I don’t think too much about it. It is an effect or something that comes before good golf. If you win the contests you will go to number one. If you give me another Masters this year, I’ll give you number one. Give it to others. The motivation is the victories, I don’t play to stay number one.”he explained in a press conference.
Rahm is in Mexico, where starting this Thursday he will defend his Mexican Open title which will be held at the Vidanta golf course, in the Puerto Vallarta resort, on the Pacific side of the country.
“What makes me happy is breaking records, going down in golf history and not being number one. I’m trying to get as high as I can, I don’t know where I’m going, but I know I can get more . . . added.
The Basque golfer considers that by now he has noticed that he has begun to strengthen his brand as an athlete and hopes that this will reward him with a million dollar commercial contract.
“Winning the Masters has changed in these four months, the acceptance and attention I have outside and inside golf. It’s still not the same as other great athletes, but it’s getting better. If there’s time to sign it’s long-term now,” he said.
The golfer said that, although he arrived in Mexico with less time off than he needed, he did not come “on vacation” because, if he won the title, it would be his first successful defense at a PGA tournament.
“The welcome in Mexico is always good, even before you win something. They make me feel myself. As a Hispanic there is always an extra motivation to win a tournament in a country where Spanish is spoken,” he says.
