Whether or not they win the Premier League, Arsenal’s success this season should serve as an example for Chelsea to regain their luster after their disappointing run.
That’s how he understands Frank Lampard, Chelsea’s interim manager, ahead of tomorrow’s derby against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The ‘gunners, second, will be looking for a win to regain the Premier League lead that was robbed of them by Manchester City on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Chelsea dropped to 12th place, with no option to fight for any goals, in what was their worst season since 1993-1994 when they finished 14th in the Premier League. All this despite the huge transfer costs of its new American owners since they sold the club a year ago.
Chelsea face Arsenal on Tuesday who have finished outside the Premier League’s top four for the past six seasons, between 2016 and 2022, but are currently fighting for the title along with Manchester City after a big improvement at the hands of their coach . Mikel Arteta.
“He has a clear identity”
“It’s a long process where you want to go,” Frank Lampard points out. “I remember facing Mikel in that first stage. Sometimes they played five, sometimes four, now their identity is clear. There is a lot of teamwork, Mikel, line-up and good recruiting. Do we have a chance to do it? Yes Does it take time and good decision? Absolutely, yes. But you’ll get there.”
Lampard stressed that at Arsenal he knows how to be patient: “The coach, the players and the owners are questioned and this process can take two or three years. They are a good example that they did that well”.
Hard work to regain trust
Lampard admitted that Chelsea’s players have “low confidence” due to their poor form, but challenged his team to counter that with hard work.
“You can only work to get a level of performance that restores your confidence,” said Lampard, who has lost all five games, two of them in the Champions League against Real Madrid, and has conceded nine goals from when taking over from Graham Potter.
The experience as a Chelsea player
“I’ve been in moments where confidence is low because nobody wants to lose games. I’ve had moments as a player where we’ve lowered our standards as a team and we’ve had to raise them,” Lampard recalled.
And he said: “Looking at history, we were able to recover it by working hard. We can only consider the future and work hard to take the team where we want.”
