It was an open secret, but this Monday it was officially confirmed. Novak Djokovic will compete at the next US Open after the US government confirmed it will end vaccination requirements against COVID-19 for international travelers on May 11.
The number 1 in the world, one of the highest level of athletes not vaccinated against COVID-19, he missed the last edition of the New York Grand Slam because of his refusal to get vaccinated.
The 35-year-old Serb was banned from entering the country this year after unsuccessfully applying to the US government for special permission to play in Indian Wells and Miami.
Djokovic missed last year’s Australian Open and was banned from the country because of his vaccine situation, and has said on more than one occasion that he would rather skip the Grand Slams than get vaccinated against COVID.
Djokovic won three of his 22 major titles at the US Open. The hard court Grand Slam will be held from August 28 to September 10 this year.
