The Austrian defense of Arsenal, laura wienroither, is the latest women’s soccer player to tear an ACL after the club confirmed her injury on Thursday. Wienroither, 24, suffered the injury in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Wolfsburg on Monday.
She is the fourth Arsenal player to tear her ACL this season after England captain Leah Williamson, England forward Beth Mead and Netherlands forward Vivianne Miedema.
Spain’s Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, Northern Ireland’s Simone Magill and France striker Marie-Antoinette Katoto also suffered injuries to their ACLs last year. Recovery from ACL surgery can take up to a year.
Studies have found that female athletes involved in sudden deceleration or change of direction, such as in soccer, are up to six times more likely to develop an ACL injury than males.
The prevalence of women’s soccer injuries in recent times has led to calls for better research. Canada and Portland Thorns forward Janine Beckie said last month that alarm bells would sound if their male counterparts suffered the same fate.
