The French Matthieu Pavon carded a 63, 8 under par on Thursday, the lowest round of his career on the European circuit at the Italian Open held at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Guidonia Montecelio, the same venue that will host the Ryder Cup from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1.
He will certainly have the attention of European captain Luke Donald in this impressive opening round with nine birdies and a bogey that allowed him to finish the day two strokes ahead of German Maximilian Kieffer.
“Overall, it was a great match. Nothing bad to say about today. I was very solid off the tee, probably only missed two fairways today – and each time it went by a few inches. Everything was very good. I wasn’t too sure to do such a low result. I knew I could do it well, but well, I was a little surprised.”
Kieffer was left alone in second after making one eagle, five birdies and one bogey in his 65 shots. France’s Julien Guerrier and China’s Wu Ashun are 5 under par.
Three Spaniards are in the top-10. Jorge Campillo shares fifth position with three other players after starting with a 67 (-4). And with 68 Santiago Tarrío and Adrián Otaegui closed the day. A -3 allowing them to be ninth. Rafa Cabrera signed the par, Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño 72 strokes, Nacho Elvira 73 strokes, Adri Arnaus and Alejandro del Rey 76 strokes and Alfredo García Heredia 77 strokes.
