Niels Wittitch will be Formula 1 Race Director for the Miami Grand Prix this weekend, after a positive review for COVID-19 last week left uncertainty over who will perform at the inaugural GP in Florida’s major state city.
A week ago it was leaked that both Wittich and his teammate Eduardo Freitas tested positive on COVID-19 after the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at the Italian Imola circuit. Both were appointed in February as alternate replacements for Australian Michael Masi, fired following a review of last year’s controversial season-ending race in Abu Dhabi.
Wittich coached the first four races of the season and he planned to question who would play the function in Miami if a negative test didn’t come on time. Traveling to the United States from Europe requires a negative test taken no later than one day before leaving, regardless of your vaccination status.
And this Wednesday the German sent a note to all teams and officials confirming his recovery and an FIA spokesman confirmed his presence for the weekend.
