Remco Evenepoel’s open letter

It’s hard to decide where to start. But let’s do this with positive news. After tests and medical tests today, I was given the green light to start training again and think about new goals.
I must first thank my wife and parents for the support they have given me these past few days. Also my closest family and friends have supported me a lot and well! Also people to thank: my teammates and @TAG team members!
Then there are my feelings after leaving the Giro. This was without a doubt one of the hardest setbacks in my very short career. Pulling out of the race with a COVID-19 infection was a devastating end to what could have been a great story. I had six months of full preparation just for this race. Sacrifices, long days in the rain, long periods away from home. Everything goes according to plan, but that’s the sport. Ups and downs are part of our job and I can accept it without any problem.
What was hard to accept was all the wrong and negative comments I received after leaving the race. I’m not the type of person to hide or be afraid of being lost. So this is for those who think. The last few days have been very difficult emotionally because of these comments. But I will take those moments to prepare for my next goals and career.
I just want to ask everyone to remember that I am not a robot, but a normal person, wife, child, teammate, etc., with normal feelings.
I’m looking forward to setting new goals and getting ready for the second part of the great season I’ve had so far.
See you again.
remco
