Erik Tenhag is nearing the end of his first season on the bench of Manchester Utd. Third in the Premier after moving up a few positions, this Saturday he will play the FA Cup final against Manchester City. But not everyone was happy this season: on August 13, at halftime against Brentford, the team lost 4-0 in a real humiliation.
“This is unacceptable. I hate myself,” he said in an interview with ‘The Times’. “I saw players just give up. They pay us to offer a good job and you can’t offer it. They pay us very well and you expect more. It was totally unacceptable how we played, if how we present ourselves,” he said.
Looking ahead to the vital game on Saturday, he is excited: “I’ve seen a lot of FA Cup finals. The tradition…I really want to (win).” It means a lot to United fans to prevent Manchester City from doing the treble. “Yes, I know. But it’s not about stopping Manchester City, it’s about us winning the FA Cup. We want to build our own legacy and era,” he said.
For Ten Hag, “football is a game of survival.” The Dutchman just saw how Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga ‘in extremis’. “We talked about why Bayern are always champions. Why do you think? Because they believe in winning. It’s about a team, it’s about working together: nothing is more important than the team. They are strong, facing failures and fighting until the end,” he stressed.
