The governing body of world soccer, the FIFAmake false claims about reducing the environmental impact of World Cup from 2022 to Qataraccording to a Swiss regulator on Wednesday.
The Swiss Fairness Commission, the advertising and communications industry’s self-regulatory body, made its determination after investigating five claims that Zurich-based FIFA promoted the tournament as carbon neutral. “The Second Chamber of the Commission has now confirmed the five complaints after a complicated process,” he said.
The commission, which issues recommendations but is not enforced by the state, has advised FIFA not to make unsubstantiated claims in the future. In its decision, the commission said that sustainability goals should not be claimed to have been achieved without specific and generally accepted methods for measuring them, or ensuring that measures have been implemented. “FIFA was unable to provide evidence that the claims were accurate during the trial as required by the commission,” it said.
