Ana Peleteiro reveals the episodes of bullying she suffered as a child: “I fought back several times”

One of the most emotional moments of the chapter is Ana’s visit to the institute: “From here I have no memories like before. This is a huge change. I came from a very small, very familiar school and here, suddenly, I entered a class with 32 people, with people from other schools, new teachers, my mother (teacher in the first center) was gone…” .

“That was when I suffered a bit of bullying, which I didn’t suffer from bullying because I stood up for myself all the time, but I had to fight several times. So of course, my father spent the whole day at the head of the study. But he was happy. He always tells me ‘Stand up for yourself, son, like I have to come here every day of the week’“, the Galician athlete explained about that time, which marked him so much in the future.

Although the Olympic medalist did not hesitate to detail that “they did not eat me”, he made it clear that I had to fight a lot. It was the first time in my life that they called me ‘black shit’. I became defensive. I went from being in a school where I was a ‘happy flower’ (happy) to starting to have fights, arguments, I had to defend myself…”.

Finally, and as a reflection, Ana Peleteiro emphasized that “black for me is not an insult, it is the fact of doing it in a deceptive way and wants to reduce me. I’ve been through a lot, it wasn’t easy and you’re not that mature. You have no reference to what you hear that it’s not bad, it’s a good thing. I need a little help and support points to better defend myself.”
