Remco EvenepoelBelgian Soudal-Quick Step cyclist who finished fourth in the third stage of tour of switzerlandsaid he was still not in “top form” after withdrawing from the Giro d’Italia after testing positive for the coronavirus.
“It’s like I’m not in top shape yet, there’s still progress. But I think I can be happy with what I’m showing now after a few days off the bike. Let’s trust that the sensations will improve in the next few days,” he said in statements released by his team on social networks.
Evenepoel, second overall, 17 seconds behind Danish Mattias Skjelmose, checked the future of the day, where he moved into the leading group with a few kilometers to go despite not being able to fight for the final victory.
“I went out with six or seven kilometers to go and made a good gap, but I struggled for two or three minutes during which I had to free my fellow escapees. I continued to fight until the end and finished fourth. It would be better to finish third because of the bonuses,” he said.
