Jay Monahan, commissioner of the PGA Tour, has suffered a medical problem and is on medical leave for an unspecified period of time. This was confirmed by the American circuit in a statement on Tuesday evening. No further information was provided or the extent of the illness was detailed.
The PGA Tour said in this same note that director of operations Ron Price and executive vice president Tyler Dennis will direct the day-to-day operations of the Tour in Monahan’s absence.
“The Board fully supports Jay and appreciates that everyone respects his privacy,” the statement read. He added: “Our thoughts are with Jay and his family during his loss and we wish him a speedy recovery. We have a strong and experienced leadership team in place, and our priority is to support our players and continue the ongoing work to further lead the PGA Tour and the future of golf.
Monahan, 53, joined the PGA Tour in 2008 as executive director of the TPC. He moved into an executive role with the tour in 2013 and took over as commissioner from Tim Finchem in 2017.
This news comes just days after Monahan and the PGA Tour announced a surprise deal to Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fundmain financial support of LIV Golf. As part of the proposed settlement, all disputes between the circuit and LIV will be settled. In the new entity, Monahan is expected to continue as CEO and PIF top leader Yassir Al-Rumayyan is expected to serve as chairman.
