F1 clarified the current situation between Barcelona and Madrid

Date:

The current CEO of F1, Stefano Domenicali, He referred to the possibility of F1 continuing in Barcelona beyond the term set out in the current contract (until 2026 inclusive) or if Madrid could take over the calendar instead. This was done on the official F1 podcast, ‘Beyond the Grid’. In it, the Italian pointed out that he does not see the possibility of having two F1 races in Spain on the same course and that he will hold discussions “in the coming months” with the two options, Barcelona and Madrid, where he clarified that he would not consider politics and only “commercial, technical and sporting” issues.

“It’s a very strong market right now, audience data is growing, and there’s a lot of it. There have been two races in Spain, but at the time the business wasn’t that big, we still had an almost European calendar, so I didn’t see it as much as possible. Now we have opened more of everything, with more races”Domenicali said.

“I have always been very transparent in Barcelona, that is my style, but we have not made a decision yet. It is true that Madrid is interested in having a GP in the future and this is a good sign about the state . of Formula 1. We want to have the best competition between places, no political discussions, only commercial, technical and sporting discussions that will come in the coming months,” he added on the official F1 podcast.

24 races in 2023

In addition, the F1 CEO clarified that next year Liberty Media aims to have 24 races on the calendar, the same number that was planned this year before the cancellation of the Chinese GP (due to the pandemic) and the Emilia Romagna GP ( due to flooding).

The number of races we are looking for and want to have next year is 24, this year we did not reach it for various reasons. This is the right number because it is what the market needs, the right balance between demand and logistical demands for all teams. This is the number we should look for to make a profit in the long term,” argued Domenicali.
