Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele were the main stars this Thursday at the opening of the United States Open at the Los Angeles Country Club, when they both signed a -8 that established a new record for this ‘big’, where Scottie Scheffler (-3) and Jon Rahm (-1) were forced to return.
The 123rd edition of the United States Open opened with two unprecedented brands, signed by two Californian golfers. Fowler, born in Murrieta, and Schauffele, a San Diego native, delivered 62-hit cards and beat Johnny Walker’s mark (-7), which stood for fifty years.
And sometimes it seems other golfers tend to go for that shared record, with Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy starring.
Dustin Johnson was a -6 with three holes to gobut signed three pars and had to settle for second position, shared with Wyndham Clark.
McIlroy got off to a great start with five birdies in the first eight holes, but ended his round with a bogey on 18, his only error of the day, leaving him tied for third at -5. He tied with Bryan Harman.
Farther from the leaders is Rahm, this year’s Augusta Masters champion, started at a -1 and these are seven effects.
