Lawrence’s comeback to win the BMW International Open

Date:

South African Thriston Lawrence, with a final card of 275 strokes (-13), after a fourth round with 69 (-3), returned at the end of the last four holes, with victory at the BMW Open, tournament of the DP Word Tour played at the Eichenried club in Munich.

It was Lawrence’s eighth professional victory, his fourth on the European Tour, with his last victory coming in December 2022 at the South African Open, in a tournament already on the DP Word Tour 2023 calendar.

The victory of the 26-year-old Lawrence was somewhat unexpected. He started the day four shots behind the then leader, Dutchman Joost Luiten, who seemed to have the situation under control until minute 17 when the South African pressured him to sink the European.

And it is that in a day without good routes, Luiten seems to control the rest of the rival where he maintained one or two strokes of the advantage. Furthermore, at the end of the 14th hole, Lawrence was two shots behind the European, still in the lead but guilty of a certain conservatism.

The Dutchman will pay dearly, looking to snap a streak of five years and four months without winning a European Tour tournament. And the final key would come when Lawrence matched him with a ‘birdie’ on the 17th hole that also put him at -13.

Luiten, who was closing in on the 16th hole at the time, felt the pressure, then bogeyed 17, went to -12, and saw how a victory that seemed within his grasp began to slip away. With Lawrence already in the home club as the leader (-13), the Dutchman needed a ‘birdie’ on 18 (par 5) to force the tiebreaker and an ‘eagle’ to win.

Bad start, he almost went into the water and left the ball on the rocks. He received an acceptable e. He even had a long pair where he held the ‘birdie’. But the victory went to Lawrence, who signed the final card with 8 ‘birdies’ and five ‘bogeys’.

Luiten finished second, one stroke behind the South African, after his 74 (+2), the result of a ‘birdie’ and three ‘bogeys’.

Among the Spaniards, the best was Jorge Campillo, fourteenth with 282 (-6), who presented the best card on the fourth day with 66 (-6). Borja Virto accumulated 285 (-2) and Rafa Cabrera Bello went to 288 (+2).
