Uruguayan Fernando Gorriaran and Argentine Nicolás Ibáñez scored a goal each Sunday to make the UANL Tigers beat the Tuzos del Pachuca in the match for the Champion of Champions trophy of the 2022-2023 season of Mexican soccer. Israel Luna scored for Pachuca. The result made the team led by Uruguayan Robert Dante Siboldi the best club in the country last year and marks the fourth time the cats have won this title.
In the rivalry of the two champions of the last season of the Mexican first division met, the Tuzos of Uruguayan Guillermo Almada won the Apertura 2022 tournament, in October, and the felines won the Clausura 2023 in May. Los Tigres dominated the first half, while Pachuca, with a renewed squad in view of the Apertura title in 2022, struggled to produce association football.
In the 32nd minute, the cats took the lead. Diego Reyes put a service in behind the midfield which was caught by Frenchman André-Pierre Gignac near the area, who made a game-changing move on the right wing that allowed Gorriaran to determine the 0-1 score against a center by Juan Pablo Vigón.
The rivalry did not change in the second half and after a mistake by Vigón, who in the 69th minute dropped a header on the right post of Argentine Óscar Ustari, Pachuca goalkeeper, Ibáñez proved the winner. In the 76th minute, Colombian Luis Quiñones, on the left, crossed a line that was at the second post and without a marker, Ibáñez jumped with his head to convert 0-2.
Minutes later, in the 79th minute, Tigres lost concentration and allowed Pachuca to take part in the game. Francisco Figueroa, right, put a serve into the area that Luna finished with his head to make it 1-2. This meeting marks the beginning of the 2023-2024 season, which begins this Friday on the first day of the 2023 Apertura, the day on which Pachuca will make its debut when visiting Mazatlán; the cats play on saturday when they host puebla.
