Scotland are mourning the death of their legendary manager Craig Brown

Date:

Craig Brown, the last coach to lead Scotland to the 1998 World Cup in France, died on Monday at the age of 82, as announced by Aberdeen, the club where he finished his career.

“All of us at Aberdeen FC are saddened by the loss of our beloved former manager, manager and club ambassador, Craig Brown,” Aberdeen’s statement said.

Player whose career was cut short at age 27 due to knee injury, Craig Brown was the first captain of Scotland’s Under-21 squad before taking over the senior team from 1993 to 2001.

Under his leadership, he qualified Scotland for the 1996 Euro Cup in England and the 1998 World Cup. In both tournaments they did not go beyond the group stage. After failing in the qualification stages for Euro 2000 and the 2002 World Cup, Brown resigned in 2001 after managing 71 caps, a record for a Scotland manager.

He then coached Preston North End in England and then in Scotland at Motherwell and Aberdeen, until 2013, when he took up a non-executive directorship at the club.
