Unlimited chaos in F1: can it be avoided?

Date:

The Formula 1 It is a great example of the most advanced technology in the world. The best engineers and multi-million dollar resources come together in a competition that seeks perfection down to the smallest detail. Because of this, it is not surprising that yesterday the fans of ‘Great Circus’ put their hands on their heads when a few hours after the race of Austrian GP they found that the final result of the appointment was not final because of the mess that could have been avoided with the use of technology.

The result of the Grand Prix needs to be reviewed because all the penalties that should have been imposed for exceeding the track limits were not imposed. And all, because of a complaint from Fernando Alonso’s team, Aston Martin, warning of the chaos that occurred in the race. Where the green team is very fast and very smart is in the offices, presenting a complaint where they show their disagreement with the result of the race for the reason already mentioned.

Initially, Verstappen won the event over Leclerc (2nd), Pérez (3rd), Sainz (4th), Norris (5th) and Alonso, who was 6th after not having the expected speed in his car. And 5 hours after the end of the event, the festival of penalties was announced: 5 seconds for Tsunoda, 10” for Sainz, Hamilton, Gasly, Sargeant and Albon, 15” for De Vries and 30” for Ocon. In this way, Sainz, who finished 4th, finished 6th, giving the position to Norris (4th) and Alonso (5th). For his part, Hamilton moved to 8th, which gave a place to Russell (7th).

1,200 cases to review

This problem was already seen in qualifying, where many riders went over the white line that limits the track in turns 9 and 10, very fast. Max explained that with cars that are “very big and heavy”, in corners at “very fast”, it is very difficult to measure where they put the wheel. Everyone was looking for the limit to win tenth and that meant canceling almost 50 laps in the ‘qualy’.

“We’re almost newbies because of the number of times we’ve been eliminated”Max said on Friday. “I don’t think it was a good image. People might say: ‘Okay, keep the car inside the white line.’ But of course it’s difficult. You can take my car and try”he added, clarifying that “The ideal is gravel, but bikes don’t like that”. And it is this track that is shared with MotoGP.

A bigger career problem

The career problem worsened. It is noteworthy then that F1 does not have an automatic detection system for this type of infringement. Aston Martin saw this and complained. The FIA requested the list of laps with violations throughout the GP and compared them with the penalties applied. They agreed with the Silverstone team. “Due to the characteristics of the circuit layout and the tendency of many drivers to repeatedly drive outside the boundaries, an unprecedented situation has arisen. Possible violations cannot be checked during the race”responded to the FIA, which had to review “more than 1,200 cases” before updating the final classification.

“To address the issue going forward, we will renew our recommendation to the circuit to add a gravel area at the exit of Turns 9 and 10.” the FIA ended. The image provided is warning. It can be avoided.

Is gravel the solution?

Therefore, the FIA is putting on the table the possibility of putting gravel in the controversial area of the Red Bull Ring, but is this the appropriate solution?

We must not forget, for example, the accident suffered by Simon Pagenaud this weekend in IndyCar. At high speeds, when a car hits gravel, that surface can cause the car to roll violently, with rollovers as seen in the aforementioned accident on Saturday. Perhaps this proposed solution does not contribute to the safety of pilots because it is the introduction of a sensor system that automatically detects violations by pilots. Maybe that way the pilots won’t get too close to the white line.
