Ang PGA Tours refused to grant exemptions to players who applied to participate in the inaugural tournament of super league golf course funded by Saudi Arabiascheduled for June in London, according to various US media.
One month before the new event starts (June 9-11 at Centurion Golf Club in London)the PGA Tour decided to be strict with its members being attracted to other profitable competitions outside their own framework.
“We have informed those who signed up for this contest that their waiver requests have been denied in accordance with the tour rules,” tour vice president Tyler Dennis wrote in a note.
“As a result, member players are not allowed to participate in the Saudi Super League event in London under our rules. This decision is in the best interest of the tour and its players,” he added.
Failure to comply with the rules of a player’s circuit may lead to his or her suspension or exclusion.
“Unfortunately, the PGA Tour seems like hell in denying professional golfers the right to play unless it’s exclusive to one of their tournaments,” the former Australian champion said. Greg Normanexecutive director of the Super League.
“But whatever barriers the tour throw at us, we won’t stop. We will continue to offer players options to develop golf on a global scale,” he promises.
As for the DP World Tour or European Tour, it has not yet been decided on this matter. English last week Lee Westwood he asked the circuit to issue permits.
Among the stars the Super League attracted was the winner of six Grand Slams Phil Michaelsonand Spanish Sergio Garciawinner of the 2017 Masters.
The Super League has a prize pool of 25 million dollars per tournament, more than double that of each of the four ‘majors’. No event on the PGA Tour offers that much money.
And bidding looks set to continue: Norman said it has seen an additional $ 2 billion in funding for a 10-tournament series in 2023.
