Alonso: “The result is better than the rhythm”

Date:

Fernando Alonso is satisfied with the result he achieved in the 2023 F1 British GP despite the speed shown by his car, less than in other races. As was the case in Austria, the green car showed its weaknesses in a fast corner and was far from fighting for the podium with the more and more evenly matched group chasing Red Bullwherein each week a different movie will be shown depending on the track’s characteristics.

More is expected from the Aston Martin development, which should demand more performance, but Alonso warned on Saturday that it doesn’t have to be a disaster. Better clues to come. There will be tracks like this one to suffer from, and others to crave more. Right now, on this track, Oviedo had to minimize the damage and, in a car that was not ready to be 7th, Alonso finished 7th. He had no rhythm, he held on to the other faster cars behind and he benefited from a ‘Safety Car’ which gave him wings.

“We were slow all weekend in all sessions and it was no different in the race. We lacked the rhythm at the beginning with Gasly and at the end with ‘Checo’ and Albon. But hey, we tried to stay on the track for a long time with medium tires and the ‘Safety Car’ benefited us. We took the opportunity to put on the soft ones and from there, to try to maintain the position. We lost two points there with ‘Checo’ Pérez at the end, but he is very fast and I think the 7th is a little better than us. So the result, a little better than the pace”, commented the Asturian pilot.

“Positives? Definitely. Because you look at the other teams, for example Ferrari, who flew here all weekend and finished 9th and 10th, so that’s what should be avoided”, he added to ‘DAZN F1’.

It is clear that Aston Martin is no longer a podium car on all kinds of tracks as it was in the beginning. The rest of the teams have already done their homework. But there are many left. At the next appointment on the calendar, in two weeks, in Hungary, with a slow curve, the so-called Monaco without walls, the film could be different. There, the Asturian chose to be on top again, or so the theory goes. Not so means a drop in performance for his car, as his forte is this type of track, as he already showed in Monaco, where Alonso came close to pole position and victory. On the contrary, if it becomes competitive again on a mousetrap track, it will prove the theory of clear changes in performance and results between Ferrari, Mercedes, Aston Martin and now McLaren and Williams depending on the track and its characteristics, waiting for the arrival of more improvements from everyone.
