Date:

“I was not alone, I escaped with 18 riders. We arrived at the Grand Colombier with a good lead, which was a crazy experience because of the amount of fans there. Without the fans, this victory would not have been possible : their encouragement brought them to the finish line,” explained Kwiatkowski.

He World champion in Ponferrada 2014, He did not expect the breakaway to be successful, but instead to reach, for the most part, the foot of the Grand Colombier, 17 kilometers from the finish line.

“Honestly, I thought the breakaway was just a way to get to the bottom of the final climb, but I didn’t think we would make it to the finish because the UAE was pulling the peloton very hard. The plan for the day was not must be left with no big escape, like every day, because we don’t want to be left in the game if a dangerous break is made”, he explained.

The key is, Kwiatkowski said, that “the UAE has allowed this massive getaway to take place.”

“And I, for my part, found myself with the best legs of my life. I didn’t think victory was possible but… here I am!”, he added.

The victory in the Grand Colombier is also special for the Polish champion because of the memories of the previous editions. “Win at the top of the Grand Colombier it means a lot to me. He had bad memories of three years ago, when Egan Bernal suffered a lot and thought of leaving, as he finally did.”

As for the comparison to the stage he won in 2020 in La Roche-sur-ForonKwiatkowski recalled a memorable scene that came along Richard Carapaz.

});

“That day we were really full throttle all the time… Richard Carapaz and I enjoyed the last 15 kilometers together. With today’s victory, the last climb was very long for me: probably the most -beastly effort I’ve ever done in my life,” he concluded.
