Alexia Putellas stopped training in the final training session for the Spanish team in the early hours of Monday, raising doubts over whether he will be able to play against Costa Rica in his first game of world on Friday. The two-time Ballon d’Or winner has made just six substitute appearances for FC Barcelona since April when he returned from a 10-month layoff with a torn ACL in his left knee.
Putellas started two of Spain’s World Cup warm-up matches, against Panama and Denmark, but missed Vietnam’s match in New Zealand last week. Today, the Catalan left training in Spain at Massey University (Palmerston North) after just 30 minutes, where he took part in passing drills and looked comfortable. A spokesman for the Spanish team said his early departure was planned.
Midfielder Irene Guerrero spoke to the media at the end of training and said she hoped Putellas would be fit to play at Wellington’s Sky Stadium on Friday. “The most important thing is that he feels good. We are happy with him because he is a key player on and off the pitch. He trains very hard to arrive with the best sensations. He is a key player, like others 22. We are all important.”
