He Polish Ministry of the Interior has announced that the Russian tennis player Vera Zvonareva, 38 years old and former world No. 2, banned from entering the country. Zvonareva will participate in the tournament Warsaw WTAa, but the Polish border guard prevented their entry into the country on Friday. Vera flew from Belgrade on a French visa, then stayed in the transit area of Warsaw airport and on Saturday flew to Podgorica (Montenegro).
Zvonareva, currently No. 655 in singles and 60th in doubles, is still on the list of participants for the Warsaw tournament. The WTA said in a statement that it was reviewing the situation.
Poland, which supports Ukraine in its warfare against the invasion of Russiasaid that Zvonareva was on a banned list and was not allowed to enter the country for reasons of state and public security.
The statement stressed that Poland is consistent in its opposition to “the regime of (Russian and Belarusian Presidents Vladimir) Putin and (Alexander) Lukashenko” and does not allow “people who support Russian and Belarusian actions to enter our country.”
Zvonareva won 12 WTA titles in her career, the last in 2011, and played in 18 more finals, including one in masters (2008) and two from grand slam in 2010, Wimbledon and the US Open.
