The Lumbreren boxer beats Italy’s María Cecchi on points in Milan to compete for the world championship in July
Puerto Lumbreras boxer Mari Carmen Romero, ‘Mari Bicho’, has reconfirmed the title of European super bantamweight champion tonight after beating Italian boxer María Cecchi on points at the Allianz Cloud in Milan. The 36-year-old Romero captured the European crown for the first time at home in January 2020 by beating Bulgarian Ivanka Ivanova and has since become champion by beating England’s Amy Timlin in Barcelona in September 2021.
With the triumph on Italian soil, she becomes the first Spanish woman to defend the European title for the third time, allowing her to compete for the world championship in July.
The battle was followed in Puerto Lumbreras by hundreds of neighbors, who saw the triumph of ‘Mari Bicho’ on a giant screen installed by the city council in the auditorium of the cultural center.
