Geraint Thomas will lead the eight-man team of INEOS Grenadiers in Back to Spain of this year, that starts on August 26 in Barcelonathe British team was announced on Friday.
The Welsh cyclist finished second in this year’s Giro d’Italia and won the Tour de France in 2018. Thomas is the only Briton in the team for the Vuelta and, at 37, he brings a wealth of experience to the race.
“Geraint showed his form this season and showed the benefit of his many years of Grand Tour racing at this year’s Giro d’Italia,” said Rod Ellingworth, INEOS race director.
“His experience, his insight and knowledge, his composure and leadership skills will be useful in a career like this,” added Ellingworth.
Thomas has only participated in the Vuelta once, and he hopes to enjoy the experience even more. He finished in 69th position while riding for Team Sky, the former name of INEOS Grenadiers.
“I really want to go back to La Vuelta. I hope it’s better than 2015 – which was terrible – it wasn’t the most fun Grand Tour I’ve done,” said Thomas.
