The coach of the national team Uruguay, Marcelo Bielsasaid this past dawn that until now he has not maintained contact with Luis Suarez and edinson cavani before the call for the qualifying matches against Chile and Ecuador. Despite the fact that the Argentine coach announced that he will deliver the final list of players next Monday, he said that both Suárez and Cavani are in the “callable” category.
“Indeed, I have not talked with them. At the time, I have a lot, a lot of consideration for the players who acquire the dimension of idols,” he said at a press conference held at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo.
In this sense, Bielsa pointed out that both Cavani and Suárez have expressed their intention to continue with the Uruguayan team, so, in his opinion, any contact with both players in this regard is “unnecessary”.
“They have become summonable players. Since they are summonable players, it is my obligation to select them every time there is a call. So, that is not what I thought. There is no need to talk. They reported that their selection cycle is not over yet. ,” he said.
The coach insisted that since the players had expressed their intention to continue with Celeste, there was no need for further communication. “A player is because of his background and because of the current activities and availability, the willingness to participate. Cavani and Suárez have a great background. I have observed the current activities of Cavani and Suárez,” he said.
Asked about the possible end of the cycle of players in the Uruguayan team, Bielsa was emphatic when stating his impossibility to influence these decisions of each player. “It’s impossible for me to decide that a player’s cycle is over. Here players play for nothing, they don’t play for money, they play for the love of the shirt. How can I allow myself to say no to Suárez or Cavani, with any footballer from one country, you cannot be chosen”, he sentence.
Uruguay will host the Chile team at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo on September 8 and travel to Quito to face Ecuador at the start of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
