Date:

The Salamancan Mario García Romoin miles, and the people of Burgos Daniel Arce and Saul Ordonezin the 3,000 hurdles and 800 meters, respectively, are the three Spaniards who will compete in the finals of Diamond League which will be held on September 16 and 17 at Eugene (United States)as confirmed by World Athletics with the final list of participants.

Daniel Arce will compete in the 3,000 hurdles, an event where Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali, Olympic champion and double world champion, will start as the heavy favourite, and where the world record holder, Ethiopian Lamecha Girma, will not be there.

In the ‘Bowerman Mile’, Mario García Romo, sixth in the world at 1,500 meters, will face Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the final, leading the list of athletes ready to surprise the Norwegian, which includes the American Yared Nuguse, the Kenyans Kipkorir Cheruiyot and Abel Kipsang, the Dutch Niels Laros or his compatriot Narve Gilje Nordas, trained by Jakob’s father, who his son does not speak to.

Saúl Ordóñez, in the 800 meters, is the only athlete of the nine finalists who this season has not dropped to 1:44 – he recognizes 1:44.54 as the best mark of the course – because the others are in 1:43, including the current world champion, Canadian Marco Arop, who will be looking for victory as the main favourite.

With the presence of Saúl Ordóñez, Mario García Romo and Daniel Arce, Spain has three representatives again in 2021 (Mohamed Katir, Ignacio Fontes and Marta Pérez), since last year only Jordan Díaz and Asier Martínez were present in the final from Zürich.

So far, the only Spaniards who have been proclaimed Diamond League champions are Ruth Beitia in 2015 and 2016 in the high jump and Orlando Ortega in 2016 and 2019 in the 110 hurdles.
