Peru managed to defeat Norway 4-1 in Sunday’s World Group 1 in Lima with three wins for the Andean country’s main racket player Juan Pablo Varillas, and managed to advance to the ‘qualifiers’ for a place at the 2024 Davis Cup.
After a 1-1 draw on the first day played on Saturday, the Peruvians won this Sunday in doubles at the Hermanos Buse Stadium of the Lawn Tennis Club of the Exhibition.
Juan Pablo Varillas and Arklon Huertas Del Pino faced Norwegians Viktor Durasovic and Herman Hoeyeraal, who dominated the start of the game, but lost 6-4 and 6-2.
With a one-point lead on the scoreboard, Varillas played against Durasovic (366 ATP) in a highly anticipated match in which the Peruvian, who occupies the 70th place in the ATP rankings, easily won in just one time 6-1 and 6. -1 to Norwegian.
With Peru already qualified for the next round, local Ignacio Buse (470) won 6-2, 6-4 and 11-9 in the final match of the day against Norwegian Nicolai Budkov after an intense face to face.
With four points, the team led by Luis Hornada is making history and has qualified for the ‘qualifiers’ and will look for a place in the 2024 Davis Cup finals, something that has not happened in Peru in a decade. EFE
