The first 20 minutes against Cádiz were dull, dull in attack. The absence of Nico Williams occupies the minds of fans. His outstanding role in the Spanish team is further highlighted by his lack of pitch. But, suddenly, Berenguer, his substitute, took a measured cross from his hat that Sancet, helpful, framed against the crossbar and everything changed.
Athletic picked up the pace, won the wings and put Sergio González’s men against the ropes. They were saved by two sticks from KO in the first half, but the red and white never stopped pressing and striking. There may be half a dozen, but the victory points are deserved and indisputable.
There is patience to come in from the wing, there is connection between Galarreta and Sancet and there are finishing forwards, with instinct and final success. Guru scored his last ball; Villaliber scored in the first; and Iñaki, also with the last breath of the game. And we deserve better.
Let’s not panic if they don’t come in. Only the loss of eldest Williams for the Africa Cup could weaken the group as there is no easy replacement for Iñaki. Valverde has to think about it.
On Friday in Vitoria, let the streak continue.
