The UEFA has authorized the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) for chants in favor of Serbia of their fans in a qualifying match for Eeuro cup 2024 against Kosovo last week, European football’s governing body said.
The September 12 match in Bucharest was suspended for 50 minutes after some home fans chanted ‘Serbia Serbia’ and held up a banner reading ‘Kosovo is Serbia’. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 and has gained recognition from more than 100 countries, but not Romania.
UEFA fined the FRF 40,000 euros and ordered that Romania’s next home match, a Euro qualifier against Andorra on October 15 in Bucharest, be played without fans, behind closed doors.
UEFA also fined the Ukrainian federation (UAF) 20,000 euros for “racist behavior” by its fans during a European Championship qualifying match against England on September 9 in Wroclaw, Poland, where fans displayed flags with symbols of the extreme right.
UEFA has ordered the partial closure of the Prague stadium that will host Ukraine’s next home match against North Macedonia on October 14. The UAF is also banned from selling tickets to fans for its next away match in Malta in October 17. Ukraine has not played at home since Russia started the war in February 2022.
