The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskysigned a decree on Tuesday appointing the former Ukrainian international forward of Dinamo Kiev, Milan and Chelsea, Andriy Shevchenkoas “independent” director.
Shevchenko, 46, retired from active football in 2012. With a Milan shirt he won the Champions League in the 2002-2003 season and the Scudetto the following season. Shevchenko also won the Ballon d’Or in 2004.
The former Ukrainian international is part of one of the generation of players most successful in the history of Ukrainian football and has been active ever since May of last year ambassador of the initiative UNIFIED24where their country’s authorities seek to raise funds around the world to counter Russian aggression.
Shevchenko was one of the main advocates of friendly GAME4UKRAINE, held this August in London and which featured the participation of a long cast of former footballers and celebrities. The match was used to raise money to rebuild infrastructure destroyed by Russia in Ukraine.
