The French Lille must pay the current coach of Uruguay, the Argentine Marcelo Bielsa, 2 million euros, which it fired in 2017, according to the decision handed down this Friday by the Court of Appeal of Douai (France), a very large amount. of the 19 million claimed by the technician.
While Lille’s lawyers deemed the fee fair, the coach’s lawyer, Benjamin Cabagno, deemed it “disappointing.”
Lille and Bielsa have been embroiled in a legal dispute over their compensation since the coach left the club, after just thirteen days in charge, with him arriving as the then owner’s best bet, the Spanish-Luxembourgish Gérard Lopezbut he was left in the penultimate place at the table.
Lille stuck to the dismissal for serious misconduct, considering that the coach did not comply with their repeated orders to cooperate with the sporting director, the Portuguese Luis Campos, currently at Paris Saint-Germain. She also accused him of inappropriate behavior. with his deputy Joao Sacramento.
Bielsa’s allegations
Bielsa, for his part, has revealed a clause in his contract that states he will receive all his emoluments in the event of being sacked for any reason.
The Court, as it happened for the first time in July 2021, made an intermediate decision, accepting that he had committed a serious offense, but recognizing that he was entitled to compensation.
The judges accepted the clause called by Bielsa, but at the same time they remembered that the coach started working after a few months on the bench of Leeds, then in the English second division, where he earned more than he claimed from Lille.
