McIlroy isn’t forgetting the LIV players who aren’t at Rome Ryder

Date:

Rory McIlroy he said after winning Europe The Ryder Cup in Rome rather than not having the “big personality” of today’s golfers LIV circuit as Sergio García, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter This allowed other players to take on leadership roles and gave younger players a chance to grow and develop.

García, Westwood and Poulter were absent from Europe’s victory over the United States in Marco Simone Golf & Country Club after ditching his DP World Tour affiliations following his decision to join the Saudi-backed LIV circuit.

All three have been historically instrumental in Europe’s success in the Ryder Cup over the past ten editions.

García holds the record for points with 28.5 in 10 appearances, while Westwood scored 24 in 11, as part of the team that won Europe seven times. Poulter played in seven Ryder Cups and helped Europe win five of them.

“They’ve had incredible Ryder Cup careers and they’ve made their decisions. They’ve done what they’ve done and nobody can take away from them the credit they’ve had with the European team over the years, ” said McIlroy, 34.

“But I think this week, by not having big personalities in the team room, other players had a chance to grow and shine: Viktor (Hovland), Jon (Rahm), myself . in that locker room. by some of the other big personalities, and I think it allowed the rest of the team to grow. It’s a young team. We can all grow together. Next time maybe this is the oldest person in the team. This is a new era. And it promises very well,” said the British.

Shane Lowry agree that a victory in Rome could be the start of a new era as they shift their focus to the 2025 event within Bethpage Black, in New York.

“Look at all the young players in Europe coming up, we already have a good foundation for the future and I think it’s a great opportunity to look forward to,” declared the 2019 British champion.
