Kiptum established a new marathon world record, winning in Chicago, one of the six ‘big ones’ of the season, in two hours and 35 seconds and bettering Eliud Kipchoge’s mark (2 hours, one minute and 25 seconds) .
The Kenyan distance runner was 16 seconds behind Kipchoge’s mark at the London Marathon and achieved a victory in Chicago.
“At 30 kilometers I saw that my body was responding and I could attack. And at five kilometers from the end I saw that I could achieve the world record,” said the Kenyan.
With his mark of two hours and 35 seconds, Kiptum is close to breaking the two-hour barrier, although he stressed that he is not focused on that at the moment.
The athlete briefly answered most of the questions, but spoke with great admiration for his idol Kipchoge, who he passed this Sunday.
