He Japan Olympic Committee (JOC) announced this Wednesday the withdrawal of its candidacy to organize the 2030 Winter Olympic Games in Sapporo, in the face of popular rejection of this initiative and after the ongoing scandals arising from the Tokyo 2020 Games.
“We have decided to change the plan, we will cancel the candidacy for 2030 and instead we will study the possibility of presenting a new one starting in 2034,” said the JOC president, Yasuhiro Yamashitain a press conference this Wednesday in Tokyo.
“The support of the citizens is not enough and the JOC considers that we may harm the Olympic Games if this situation continues, so we proposed the withdrawal to the mayor of Sapporo and he accepted it,” explained Yamashita.
