Uruguay linked up ‘in extremis’ with an excellent Araujo

Date:

The excitement lasted for 90 minutes. Ronald Araújo’s Uruguay, who played a superb game, lost to Colombia in Barranquilla, 2-1, but equalized on the hour mark with a penalty goal from Darwin Nuñez. The Liverpool striker donned the number 9 suit, took charge at the crucial moment, called for a penalty, and struck it from an impossible angle for the equaliser. Marcelo Bielsa’s team, with their weapons, came out looking for the fight, and eventually got the prize of the tie.

True to its style, Bielsa’s Uruguay came out to find prominence in the first half, despite being a visitor. He planted Fede Valverde in the middle, but had the freedom to hold back and grow up the field. Key players. The heavenly has creation but it has no meaning. He had chances through Mexican América player Brian Rodríguez, but he couldn’t finish. Sometimes because of the skill of Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas, other times because of his own ineptitude. Facundo Pellistri also had his chance, but he didn’t finish well.

At the back, Ronald Araujo provided security. Flawless from top to bottom. It was the second mark for Luis Díaz, as he surpassed Naithan Nandez. He had a providential closure before the Liverpool striker arrived on the half hour, preventing the goal.

The Colombian’s winner, making it 1-0 at home to Barranquilla, was a quality touch from James Rodriguez. The former Real Madrid player received an aerial ball near the penalty spot, stroked it to kill it, and then hit it with his instep to beat Santiago Mele. Colombia, with less popularity and fewer arrivals, went into the 45-minute break with a 1-0 victory.

The light blue came out quickened for the complement, with the entry of Cristian Olivera and Matías Olivera. And a minute later, on a still ball, Ronald Araújo dragged the scores down and full-back Olivera popped up from behind to tie the score.

It seems Bielsa’s proposal could lead the Uruguayans to move on. But six minutes into the second half, the Colombian scored again. Matheus Uribe finished perfectly to make it 2-1, from the same position as James’ goal: near the penalty spot.

Colombia had three chances to go wide, but twice the goal, and once a terrible definition by Luis Díaz, prevented it. James, with gaps in the middle, spread the talent. Always accurate qualifications and with a taste of purpose.

Uruguay suffered from heat and humidity in complement. He pressed less, gave ground, and came less, but he did not give up the search for the goal with his weapons. He could have equalized with ten minutes remaining, after Giorgian De Arrascaeta’s excellent clearance for Maxi Araújo.

And the excitement is left for last. Long kick by Maxi Araújo and penalty by goalkeeper Camilo Vargas, who was playing with cramps.

Darwin Nuñez took the responsibility and placed it in an impossible place, in the top corner. Tie, 2-2, from behind and away. This is the prize for the quest for fame in the light blue of Bielsa and Ronald Araújo.
