Megan Rapinoe scored a double on Sunday to power the OL Reign’s 3-0 victory over the Chicago Red Stars on the final day of the NWSL, the American professional women’s soccer league, and qualify her team for the playoffs.
Rapinoe38, has postponed his retirement from football this way because he will continue to compete for at least one more week in the postseason, after announcing he would hang up his boots at the end of the year.
OL Reign reached the final day in the playoff positions, but are fighting with five other teams for four tickets and need three points to advance.
He did not disappoint at SeatGeek Stadium in Chicago, the city where he began playing in 2009, and the Reign finished the campaign in fourth place.
Alex Morgan’s San Diego Wave won the ‘Shield’ for the best team of the regular season after defeating Racing Louisville 2-0 on the final day, which included a goal from Morgan himself.
That victory, along with the resounding loss suffered by the Portland Thorns in Angel City (5-1), allowed the Wave to finish first.
This has been a special year for San Diego. The final of the NWSL will be held exactly in the city of California and, in addition, the men’s soccer game in the MLS has delivered a new franchise to that market.
The playoffs begin next Sunday, October 22, with the quarterfinals between OL Reign and Angel City and between North Carolina Courage and Gotham.
The winner of Reign-Angel City will face the Wave, already qualified; The winner of Courage-Gotham will face the Thorns, current champions.
Thorn forward Sophia Smith won the league’s golden boot with eleven goals in the regular season
