Taylor Fritz and Diego Schwartzman made their debut on the right foot at the Tokyo tournament. The American, the reigning champion of the tournament, won 6-4, 6-3 against the British Cameron Norrie in a duel that he controlled without much difficulty despite not offering his best tennis.
In its part, Schwartzman scored Argentina’s goal of the day against Francisco Cerúndolowho crashed in the second race and was at the mercy of ‘Peque’.
Schwartzman, despite losing serve on the first serve of the match and did so again in the fifth game, recovered on both occasions to take the opening set 6-4 after earning his third break. Garín needed two hours and 16 minutes to overcome the Japanese barrier, which caused many problems for him. In the end he was more effective in the last set and scored 6-4, 3-6 and 6-3 the 120th win of his career.
The Chilean, who has won at least one main draw match in three of the four tournaments he has played on the current Asian tour, will face the Australian in the second round Alexei Popyrin, who defeated Russian Karen Khachanovseventh favorite, 6-4 and 6-2.
