The French Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, accused again Karim Benzema of being a means of spreading the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood and criticized him for not condemning the jihadist killing of the Arras high school teacher on Friday.
In an interview with BFMTV channel, Darmanin maintained his accusations on Thursday, developed for the first time last Monday, despite the fact that it did not provide concrete evidence of Benzema’s alleged involvement in that Islamist current.
The French striker “selective anger”, because “he has not yet made a tweet about the killing of the professor of Arras, for the beheaded babies, for the raped women, for the 1,300 massacred in Israel by Islamic terrorism,” the minister accused.
He also criticized Benzema for not publicly condemning Hamas, which originally came from the Muslim Brotherhood, and instead only giving his support to the Palestinian civilian population of Gaza amid the Israeli offensive.
Benzema confirmed, through his lawyer, that he will sue Darmanin for the insults associating him with the Muslim Brotherhood, organization that is also considered terrorist in Saudi Arabia, country where the legend of Real Madrid currently plays.
“Testing? We need to stop being naive”
Asked repeatedly in the interview about what evidence he had of what he called the footballer’s “notorious links” to that group, the minister did not give details but assured that we should stop being “naive” and said that he didn’t “exaggerate” those links.
The member of the Government of Emmanuel Macron insisted that the French international This is a form of propaganda for strict Islam. and explained that these currents take advantage of the popularity of some athletes and artists to spread their “anti-French” messages on the networks.
Citizens are not in danger
Although some public officials on the right have demanded that Benzema’s French nationality be revoked (something that is impossible according to the current legal framework since he was born in France), Darmanin did not enter into that controversy and said that the football player is “French.”
Benzema, who is 35, played 97 international matches before ending his career with the French team in 2022 due to ongoing disagreements with coach Didier Deschamps.
This season he signed for Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, after 14 seasons at Real Madrid.
