The American tennis legend Billie Jean King called this week for the creation of a mixed tennis “World Cup” and that players wear numbers on their shirts to meet public demands.
The winner of 39 Grand Slam tournaments, including 12 singles titles, wants to combine the two international men’s and women’s competitions, the Billie Jean King Cup and the Davis Cup, in a single World Cup.
“When I say we are the Women’s Tennis World Cup, people understand it immediately, knowing that it’s country against country, that it’s exciting, that it can be played anywhere in the world…”, the 79-year-old former player told the press on Wednesday, before the final of the competition that bears his name (from November 7 to 12 in Seville).
The American hopes to be inspired by the soccer World Cup and its global aura: “I went to the World Cup in Australia and I saw the girls there, there were 75,000 people… “It’s very stimulating, the possibilities are endless.”
“I want us to sit down and try to find a win-win solution“he added, suggesting, for example, that players wear “numbers on their jerseys” to make them more recognizable, like in football.
The last Fed Cup, renamed in honor of Billie Jean Kingwill be played in Seville, while the Davis Cup will take place in Malaga from November 21 to 26.
Both competitions will be played without some stars, including the Polish Iga Swiatek and the Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, that says busy schedule.
