Morocco will invest 1.3 billion euros in stadiums

The Government of Morocco will mobilize a total budget of 14.5 billion dirhams (about 1.3 billion euros) to repair six stadiums in the Maghreb country and build a new one in the Casablanca region to host the 2025 Africa Cup and the 2030 World Cup. which will be organized with Spain and Portugal.

The budget was approved in an agreement signed between the Minister of Education and Sports, Chakib Benmusathe delegated minister of the Economy in charge of Budgets, Faouzi Lekjaaand the general director of Caja de Depósito y Gestiones (CDG, a public investment company), Khaled Safir, in a ceremony led by the Executive President, Aziz Ajanuch, according to a statement from the Presidency of the Government.

According to the agreement, a total of 9.5 billion dirhams (868 million euros) will be mobilized for the renovation of six stadiums in two phases: a first phase between 2023 and 2025 to renovate these areas in accordance with the standards of African Confederation of Football (CAF), followed by a second reform phase (2025-2028) in accordance with FIFA standards.

The agreement also includes a budget of 5 billion dirhams (45 million euros) for construction of a new stadium in Bensliman, in the Casablanca region between 2025 and 2028. Morocco is seeking to be the venue for the grand final of the 2030 World Cup.

Ajanuch pointed out, in a statement included in the note, that the organization of the African Cup in 2025 and the World Cup in 2030 with Spain and Portugal represents “a recognition of the place that Morocco occupies among the great nations.”

At the same time, he assured that the Executive will remain active to carry out all the projects and guarantee the success of the organization of the two football events.
