Switzerlanda country that has the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne but has not hosted the Games on its territory for 75 years, is considering the possibility of presenting its candidacy for winter 2030, that they would have at least half a dozen headquarters spread across the country.
According to the project, Lausanne could host an opening ceremony and skating testsBern (national capital) is the closing season, Freiburg ice hockey, Crans-Montana resort alpine skiing and the Conches Valley cross-country skiing.
Before being presented to the IOC, the candidacy must be approved at the annual meeting of the Swiss Olympic Committee, which will be held on November 24 in the town of Ittigen, near Bern and the organization’s headquarters.
Switzerland has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1928 and 1948.both in the famous winter resort of Saint Moritz, in the southeast of the country.
Since then, both Saint Moritz and two other cities in the country, Bern and Sion, have submitted candidacies. at the Winter Games on several occasions, although they lost in the final votes against other rivals or withdrew in the selection process.
For the Summer Olympics, the only Swiss city that has ever presented a candidacy is Lausannealthough it was not successful for those in 1944 (cancelled by the Second World War) or for those in 1948 and 1960, which were granted in London and Rome respectively.
The venue for the 2030 Olympics is set to be announced on July 24 next year. at the 142nd IOC assembly, which will take place in Paris, two days before the start of the Summer Games in the French capital.
The 141st IOC Session held in Bombay (India) allowed the possibility of a double award of the Winter Games, for 2030 and 2034, if deemed appropriate. As explained in the said meeting, Switzerland, Sweden and France are the countries with the most advanced plans to present a possible candidacy.
