Levante said goodbye to the First Division with insufficient success but raised their heads. The azulgrana players honored the shield until the last minute of the match, faced relegation, and got a well-deserved victory over Vallecas against Rayo, who had already done their homework and showed extreme relaxation in last against the league.
Rayo opened the scoring in the 19th minute through Álvaro García, who entered the area on the left wing, cut off his defender and fired a shot that went into Cárdenas ’goal.
That goal calmed Rayo, who found themselves in front of a Levante who was injured in their recent relegation and also with the difficulties they faced in the duel, with twelve players among the injured, given sanction and affected by covid-19 outbreak. However, the Valencian team was not afraid of Vallecas and knew how to face the difficulty to get the score back before the break.
The equalizer came in the 25th minute, when Uruguayan Sarachi inserted a cross from the left that Gonzalo Melero finished in the penalty spot. And two minutes before the break, he took advantage of playing on the counter to score a second. Morales took advantage of a defensive error to start the run on the left side and, when he reached the bottom line, put a cross in place for Roger Martí to finish on goal.
In extra time, Levante widened its distinction. Mario Suárez made a mistake when he picked up the ball and Gonzalo Melero recovered it, firing from the edge of the box past Luca Zidane.
After the break, Rayo was a bit confused again and made some defensive mistakes that allowed Levante to continue creating danger until Baby invented an individual game and was shot on the spot. Sergi Guardiola did not fail from eleven meters.
Attempts at Rayo’s return failed with a new goal from Levante. Bardhi took a free kick, grabbed Pepelu, finished Rober Pier and sent Catena out of the goal line and Coke Andújar took advantage of the rebound, which was emotional in his farewell as a player of the Valencian team.
