The man from Malaga Alexander Davidovich advanced in his debut at Paris Masters 1,000, the day the tournament started. Davidovich provided the upset by beating American Ben Shelton, 15th favourite, in three sets to add his thirtieth Masters 1,000 victory by 7-6(4), 5-7 and 6-3.
It is the fifth time this season that the 24-year-old Spaniard, currently ranked 28th in the world, has beaten a top-20 player this season. Exuberant throughout the two-and-a-half-hour match, the man from Malaga dominated Shelton, holding a good percentage of first serves against an opponent who appeared to be suffering from an injury to his arm.
His next rival in a tournament where he reached the round of 16 in 2020 will appear in the rivalry between the Dutch. Tallon Griekspoor and the American Christopher Eubanks. If he succeeds in this, Davidovich can meet the Serbian Novak Djokovicworld number 1 and finalist of the last edition in a tournament he is seeking to win for the seventh time.
