Tadej Pogacardouble winner of the Tour in 2020 and 2021 and second in the last two editions behind Jonas Vingegaard, surpassed the American Sepp Kuss in the sprint to eventually win his first participation in the Saitama Criteriumplayed this Sunday in Japan.

This annual competition, created in 2013 by the Amaury Sport Organization group, which also manages the Tour de France, allows the winners and stars of the ‘Grande Boucle’ to compete in the department of Saitama, in the north of the country. Slovak Peter Sagan, who will retire from road racing to return to mountain biking next year, finished third.

Tadej Pogacar thus closed another brilliant year, marked by his return from a broken wrist to participate in the Tour de France and his third consecutive victory in the Tour of Lombardy. He also won Paris-Nice, Fleche Wallonne, Tour of Flanders and Amstel Gold Race.

“Not only did he win, but he won with gusto”said the British after the Criterium Mark Cavendish, winner of 34 Tour stages, adding that the 25-year-old rider is “his son’s idol.” “So if a 5-year-old child is excited about a race it’s because he’s an exciting runner to watch,” he praised the winner.
