Terence Crawford has lost his status as the undisputed welterweight champion. The International Boxing Federation stripped him of his welterweight title and now Jaron Ennis is the new champion, as shown by the organization’s updated classification at 147 pounds.
Crawford (40-0, 31 KO), won by technical KO in the ninth round against Errol Spence Jr. in July to consolidate his four welterweight titles. After that fight, the IBF ordered Crawford to defend the belt against the interim champion, Ennis, but the then-champion signed Spence’s unification contract with a rematch clause that was not recognized by the international organization.
So, theoretically, Crawford owed Spence a rematch, but the IBF, not recognizing that clause, took the title from Crawford and gave it to Ennis.
The IBF sent a letter ordering Crawford to face the interim champion. The text of that document is as follows: “On September 22, the IBF received an email from Harrison Whitman, Crawford’s representative, indicating that the agreement for Spence-Crawford contained an immediate rematch clause provision, which used by Errol Spence. Because of that, Terence Crawford cannot enter into negotiations with Jaron Ennis. No contract for a Championship contest shall contain any clause or provision, of any kind, guaranteeing or in any way guaranteeing or promising any of the competitors of another Championship when such clause or provision interferes with the mandatory defending a title.
Ennis, 26 years old (Philadelphia) and current title holder (31-0, 28 KOs) is one of the best young talents in boxing.
