Canada, world No. 1 for the first time in history

Canadaafter his success in Seville in the view of Italyrising five places in the ranking of countries in Billie Jean King Cup and leading for the first time in its history, as announced this Monday by International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Canada’s team, led by the 2021 US Open finalist, Leylah Fernandezwon the first women’s tennis world champion title by defeating Italy 2-0, moving from eighth place to fifth.

Canada became the eighth country to take the top spot since the rankings were introduced in November 2002. The list is completed by Slovakia, France, Russia, Italy, the Czech Republic, Australia and Switzerland.

Also notable in the classification was the place won by the Czech Republic, the 2023 semi-finalist, who rose from fifth to fourth position, while Switzerland, the 2022 champion, fell to third after being replaced by Canada in first place.

The Billie Jean King Cup country rankings are published after each week of competition and reflect the teams’ performance over the past four seasons. Recent results count for more. The current ranking covers a five-year period while the 2020 and 2021 seasons have been combined as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
