Spartak Moscow killed its second team

Date:

The Russian Premier League club Moscow Spartak announced this Monday that he disbanded his second-tier team, citing financial problems. In light of the new facts and considering the need to reduce the club’s budget and the purpose of the financial problems, having Spartak-2 is considered inappropriate, ”Spartak said in a statement.

Spartak-2 has played in the second-tier Russian National Football League (FNL) since 2013. Spartak said they will instead focus on building their academy and youth team.

It should be noted that the club, one of the most popular in Russia, lost Nike as its kit sponsor this month after the company terminated its sponsorship deal as the team will no longer participate in European competitions next season.

UEFA, the governing body for European football, has decided that Russia will not have affiliated teams that will participate in its club competitions in the 2022-23 season due to Putin’s military campaign in Ukraine.

Russia sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine on Feb. 24 in what it called a special operation to reduce the military capability of its southern neighbor and eliminate people it called dangerous nationalists. The West imposed extensive sanctions on Russia and provided military support to Ukraine in response.
