The strange reason why Nigeria did not fire its coach

Date:

The entertainment of Nigeria is a cry against José Peseiro, the 63-year-old Portuguese coach who has held the post of national coach of that African country since May 2022. The team’s poor performance in the qualification phase for the 2026 World Cup (two draws in as many game against the teams of Lesotho and Zimbabwe) put the Portuguese on the ropes.

And fans aren’t the only ones calling for his head. Nor from Nigerian Federation They hide their discomfort from Peseiro, whom they suddenly throw away… if they can.

And, according to Nse Essien, a member of the Federation, this body is not sacking Peseiro just because does not require money to pay him sums that would allow the termination of his commitment.

“If we have money, we will be ready to fire him, because we are not happy,” said Essien, a member of the Federation’s executive committee. “It is unfortunate that we are like we are, in a dangerous situation,” said the executive, referring to both the Federation’s sporting and economic situation.
